Student Portal Development
How did Illinois Tech Get Engineering Students to Show Up?
Graduation required students to attend experiential events. Most weren't. I built a gamified web platform that turned mandatory participation into competition — giving students a verified, portfolio-ready record of every event, and giving program staff the tools to manage it all without spreadsheets.

The Bottleneck
WHY DID IIT ENGINEERING THEMES NEED A student portal?
Students had to attend experiential events for graduation, but participation stayed too low.
The program needed more than an event calendar. It needed a reason for students to come back.
Staff had to manage events, schedules, invitations, and participation without a clean central system.
Completed events were hard to connect to each student’s progress and program requirements.
Students gained useful experience at events, but IIT needed a better way to track it and turn it into employer-ready portfolio proof.
The real cost of doing nothing
LOW PARTICIPATION
The events mattered, but the website did not make progress visible, competitive, or worth returning to.
STAFF BOTTLENECK
The program could only grow as fast as staff could manually coordinate, update, and track it.
PORTFOLIO GAP
The value existed, but it was trapped in event history instead of packaged as proof students could show employers.
The Solution
HOW DID THE STUDENT PORTAL TURN REQUIRED EVENTS INTO MOMENTUM?
I mapped IIT’s event participation workflow, then my team built a gamified student portal around progress, rewards, and portfolio proof.
GAMIFIED STUDENT EXPERIENCE
The portal gave students visible levels and rewards for attending experiential events. Participation stopped feeling like a checkbox and started feeling like progress.
CENTRAL EVENT MANAGEMENT
Staff could create events, update schedules, manage invitations, and track attendance from one place. No more chasing participation through disconnected tools.
PROGRESS TRACKING
The system connected each student’s event history to program requirements. Staff could see who was participating, what they completed, and where the gaps were.
EMPLOYER-READY PORTFOLIOS
Students could turn completed activity into a tangible Adobe Acrobat portfolio. The work no longer disappeared after the event ended.
Real Results
FROM REQUIRED EVENTS TO MEASURABLE STUDENT PROGRESS
I helped IIT turn required event attendance into a visible progress system that increased participation, reduced staff friction, and gave students proof they could use after graduation.
Before Custom Software
Required events with
low student engagement
Staff manually managed schedules, events, and invitations
Participation history was hard to connect to student requirements
Students had limited proof of experiential learning
After Custom Software
Gamified levels and rewards that
made progress visible
150+ events managed through
one cleaner system
Student activity tied to progress,
completion, and rewards
$10,000+ projected increase in

NEED A STUDENT PORTAL STUDENTS ACTUALLY USE?
I’ll audit how students register, attend, earn credit, and prove outcomes — then scope the simplest build that gives staff control without adding more admin work.
